A data platform for SEE climate scenarios and indicators

The use of climate scenarios and impact indicators is an important aspect of cooperation between the research community and decision makers. This leaflet describes how the OrientGate project focused on mapping the various methodologies, tools and indicators used by meteorological services across SEE. The results were used to create the OrientGate Data Platform, which provides a single point of entry for a wide range of users, including scientists, external experts and policy makers.

Adapted forest management in Austria

Pilot Study 1

This leaflet explores the findings of the pilot study carried out in Austria at the Federal Environmental Agency’s ecosystem research site LTER Zobelboden. The study developed model-based scenarios of climate change impacts on the amount and quality of water run-off, which is influenced by forest management. Scenario results will be used to explore adaptation strategies with local authorities, forest managers and policy makers.

Adaptation measures in Romanian agriculture

Pilot Study 2

This leaflet describes the activities undertaken and the results achieved at two pilot sites in Romania: one in Covasna County, and one in Caracal County. The two sites have different agro-climatic conditions, thus different adaptation options are available. The pilot study was implemented by the National Meteorological Administration, drawing on its expertise in modelling crop systems and developing risk management tools for extreme climate conditions. The Environmental Protection Agency of Covasna was responsible for assessing local territorial plans and developing environmental strategies at local level.

Adaptation in water and coastal areas in Puglia, Italy

Pilot Study 3

This leaflet describes the research undertaken in the context of Pilot Study 3 to identify Puglia Region’s vulnerability to climate change impacts. The core of the study was an assessment of risks to water resources and coastal zones under climate modifications, including extremes, by means of modelling and spatial analysis based on climate change scenarios. The results will promote the communication of climate trends, impacts, vulnerabilities and risks, and their consideration by decision makers.

Wetland adaptation in Attica Region, Greece

Pilot Study 4

This leaflet provides details of the work being undertaken in Attica to protect more than 80 wetland areas from the negative impacts of climate change and to safeguard these elements of the natural environment not only as a habitat for wildlife but as part of the region’s water resources and as recreational areas. The pilot study focused on projections of the frequency and intensity of future drought episodes, the assessment of wetland vulnerability, and the capacity of agencies to ensure their ability to adapt.

Climate change impacts on the hydropower sector in Trentino, Italy

Pilot Study 5

This leaflet describes the pilot study carried out in two river basins in Trentino in order to identify and analyse indicators for the availability of water resources, focusing in particular on the potential for hydroelectric power production. The study aimed to evaluate areas of vulnerability in order to achieve the sustainable use of hydropower in the context of climate change and the diversified use of water resources. The ultimate goal was to propose criteria for improving policies for the development of hydroelectric power and for establishing priorities for area planning.

Urban adaptation in two Hungarian municipalities

Pilot Study 6

This leaflet outlines the goals of Pilot Study 6, which assessed the climate vulnerability of two Hungarian municipalities: Veszprém and Budapest’s District XIII, focusing on the public health sector. The leaflet describes the institutions involved and the results of the research, and also presents recommendations for improving the resilience of urban systems to the impacts of climate change.
