International workshop on urban areas and health

Nov 12, 2014
The international workshop "Adaptation to Climate Change: The Nexus between Urban Areas and the Health Sector" took place on November 12 and 13, 2014, at the premises of the Regional Environmental Center in Szentendre, Hungary.

The workshop provided an opportunity to draw final conclusions from the three years of work undertaken by the Thematic Centre on Urban Adaptation and Health in the framework of the OrientGate project.

Workshop discussions focused on a number of deliverables produced by the thematic centre in the context of recent achievements in climate science, such as the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as well as in international climate policy making. These deliverables include case studies on urban and public health vulnerability; the outcomes of field studies; and the results of stakeholder consultations. A second objective of the workshop was the preparation of a list of suggestions for decision makers on how to mainstream further adaptation considerations into planning; how to quantify impacts and estimate costs; and how to communicate with the general public and disseminate important information. The target audience included representatives of authorities at national and municipal level, research communities and civil society.
